Trends in Education Today: Grades 4 to 12 Pedagogy and Resources in Canada
This report reveals emerging national trends in pedagogical practices and educational resources as they relate to grades four to twelve history, social and natural sciences in all regions of Canada including northern audiences and First Nations, Métis and Inuit. In order to elicit both the theoretical and applied knowledge-base in the field of education today, research included both an extensive literature review and interviews. “Flights of Fancy” Lesson Plan & Classroom Materials
“Flights of Fancy” is an interdisciplinary lesson plan in which students relive moments from the life and research of Alexander Graham Bell. It features a role play, kite design, and constructivist kite-building activity where students explore forces, flight, and the value of asking questions. Sustainability Study for Projects Funded by Environment Canada
This study explored the longer-term impacts, benefits, and sustainability of Environment Canada’s EcoAction Community Funding Program and the Environmental Damages Fund. The data and conclusions from a literature review, in-depth consultations, data analysis, interviews, questionnaires, and site visits, were detailed in three reports, their associated infographics and a cumulative presentation.

Air Quality Health Index Learning Stations and Flash Application Review
Educators can choose from six 30-minute learning centres for their grade 5 or 6 students, building skills in literacy, communication, reflection, and problem-solving. Developed directly from provincial and territorial curriculum documents, topics include: ways to prepare for and predict various weather and/or air quality conditions, how media, peers and family affect decisions, outdoor safety, and environmental health issues.

Skywatchers Weather Learning Stations
This resource engages students through six 30-minute learning centers or stations designed to introduce key Canadian curricular weather concepts in a variety of learning styles. From storytelling to experimental design, this collaborative learning experience is hands-on, creative, real-world and involves technology. Science topics include fronts, properties of air, energy from the sun, weather instruments, weather reports and air pressure.

The Regeneration of Environment Canada’s Educational Resources: Adapting for the Future
This three-tiered project developed an adaptation model and guide that Environment Canada can use to help make their educational resources more consistent and appropriate for educators. It involved an extensive review of five educational resources from across Canada, identifying EC themes in curricular units for each province and territory, and developing the final model using input from a workshop with key EC representatives.

A Scan of the Formal Education System in Atlantic Canada and Environment Canada’s Potential Involvement
This report outlines the national and provincial educational structure in the four Atlantic provinces and the key opportunities for Environment Canada’s involvement within the formal education system. It includes curriculum documents, roles of key departments/school boards, teachers’ associations, teacher professional development and key processes such as supplementary resource approval.

Canadian Wildlife Service Curriculum Links Database
The Ontario Provincial K to 12 Curriculum was linked to target topics for the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) to help CWS design learning materials that are appropriate for use in Ontario schools. These links were then integrated into a searchable database to allow easy searching and access.

Sprout analyzed the source material and prototype Vox Point of Youth website to provide specific recommendations on how best to structure the site. Web 2.0 principles were used to write copy for the Vox Point of Youth Website, including youth and government sections and seven 100 word case studies. Sprout also provided next steps as part of the website consultation.

Review of Certification Test Items (Multiple Choice)
This review analyzed a set of multiple choice test items from an education perspective. It provided feedback to the client about how to improve item stems and distractors according to research-based principles of question design. Exams included: Integrated Pest Management for Agriculture and Environment (Core), Human Health & Pesticide Safety, Agriculture, Vendor, Core, Industrial, Forest, Landscape, Provincial and Federal Regulations, Aerial, Aquatic, Forestry, Greenhouse, Mosquitos and Biting Flies, Structural, and Fumigation.

This online college credit course provides participants with study guides, learning activities, online resources, evaluation materials, a course schedule, and a course map. Each theme is addressed on a global, national, and regional scale.

Customized Training – Principles of Energy Management (ESET 1103 Online)
This online college credit course provides participants with study guides, learning activities, online resources, evaluation materials, a course schedule, and a course map. Themes include energy management best practices, energy management information systems, product life cycle, energy audits, energy metering, measurement, and reporting, and statistical analysis of energy consumption patterns.
Beekeeping Course Curriculum
Sprout developed the curriculum for a proposed beekeeping course at the NSCC. This involved defining, through extensive research and stakeholders consultations, what knowledge, skills, and values future beekeepers should possess. The curriculum represents the diversity of beekeeping methods in the Maritime provinces while at the same time offering outcomes that have the potential to produce students who are competitive worldwide. Both organic and integrated pest management approaches were incorporated into expected learning outcomes.

A Scan of Halifax Regional Municipality High School Contacts and Interest in the St. John Ambulance LifeSmart Program
LifeSmart is a First Aid Training Program offered to high school students in schools throughout Nova Scotia. This project involved researching and meeting with faculty representatives from each high school in the region, providing information, generating interest, and making key contacts within the schools. A report summarized teacher availability, key challenges, communication with teachers, and detailed feedback from schools.

K to 12 PlantWatch Education Guide
This national teachers guide provides engaging activities before, during, and after students observe plants flowering in their own backyard. It is divided into clusters of activities that help students overcome aversion to prickly plants, explore the use of plants in society, study plant structure and function, and gain an appreciation for nature. It includes unique lessons complete with outcomes, background for teachers, instructional and assessment strategies, recommended grade levels, and ready-to-copy handouts and evaluation tools. The best thing about the PlantWatch Education Guide is that it is designed with both the educator and the student in mind – it is practical enough for easy classroom use and interactive enough to engage students in the content.
